Spalted timber??

Post by Baz » Thu Aug 28, 2014 1:05 am

Hopefully Ken see's this and can let me know if these lures have some spalting and maybe let us know what causes it. I will be on the hunt for more of that timber. I thought it may have been a tree that was hit by lightening.

Yes it is caused by a fungus & if your chasing more timber to make nudes ( not sure if its good at keeping out water ) find some black heart sassafras .

Thanks for the offer Damo. I was looking at buying a piece off ebay last week but it sold for heaps more then I thought it would. These lures were made out of the same timber as the bits and pieces I sent you a while ago. I'll send some good She-Oak down or some Cedar of some sort ( I think it might be brown) in return for the Sass.

Nice lures Baz ... thumbsupsmilie

Back when building furniture was a hobby of mine i did read an article about how you spalt your own timber.
think they covered the timber in moist sawdust or something along those lines & that got the process going.

Thanks Ken. It must take some time to spalt your own timber. I think I'll keep an eye out along the river bank for some more old driftwood. The pieces I used in the lures above were some willow and She Oak. The willow wa great to work with but not sure how durable it would be as a fishing lure.
