Week-end @ Bernies....sorry ..."Keith's"

Post by Rellik-doc-rob » Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:40 am

Just spent the w/end with the "Cray-fish king" Keith Baker and talked about many things , but mostly ...lure-making & lure-makers , past & present.

The running joke for the w/end was how Keith was supposed to be dead. Thats a laugh in it's self !!..which is why we called it the w/end at Bernies , adopted from the 90's comedy. But there were no broom handles or sun-glasses needed to prop Keith up. He is very much alive & still has his wicked sense of humour.
Keith is in reasonably good heath for his age , apart from some problems with his neck & back , a result of an industrial accident years ago. He hasn't made any lures for quite a few years now , and says that a broken promise with a business deal , plus a large batch of lures that were never paid for .....coupled with the un-authorised mass production of some of his lures , broke his spirit and desire to continue lure making.
Because of his neck & back injuries....he does not fish any more , and spends most of his time fullfilling a life long passion of "Orchid growing ". With no fishing being done .....& no need for any sort of fishing gear , he gave me the entire contents of his tackle box. Something I will treasure for ever & I have put a few photo's up of some of the lures he has gifted me. I have promised not to show all of the lures ...as some are proto-type designs and shapes that will be kept private.
Also is a photo of Keith with his #1 tribute lure.....and the score he has given me for my craftmanship. It is & was very humbling to get such a good score from the "King".

Plenty of blokes have asked me for Keith's contact details over the last couple of weeks , since I revealed that he is still in the land of the living. I have assured Keith that this will not be happening. His wish is to live & enjoy his retirement in complete privacy & peace.....so please dont ask.

It was a great w/end.....and another one is planned for later this year. I'm sure you will agree the lures below are something special.

***The Cray in the last photo , was given to me by Keith almost 20 years ago. 2nd photo has Keith's version of a "Stump-jumper ......3rd photo has a large & small "Min-min". All hand carve timber by Keith...

@RDR . . .

Awesome effort on your part for following this up and a great story. Sad that he felt so let down by those that ordered his lures and never paid for them and the lures you have acquired will become a part of fishing history - especially lure fishing.

Thanks to Keith and to you Rob for sharing this with us all.

It is unfortunate that some scammers put him off his game, but, it is good to hear he is following his passion. thumbsupsmilie

Think it is a good time to bring this thread back.

sorry no thought provoking titbits thumbsupsmilie

just that he was dead, some been to his funeral and he was called George!!!! -duh -duh
gross inaccuracies and perhaps some still believe they are facts.

Vince has been quiet today.
He needs to do some reading in between levelling steel beams and digging post holes.

and finally just to remind people that some idiot chucked one of his crays in carp water lol lol lol
