My first Spearhead.

Post by Pecheur » Sun Aug 07, 2011 7:26 am

Hi there,

Next weekend I will be fishing in the Mary River billabongs, for the round 3 of the Top End Barra Series.
I have never fished in the billabongs yet.
But I have read that the Spearhead is a very good lure over there.

So yesterday I decided to go to the tackle shop to get me one of them.
And on my way there, I stopped at the second hand shop.
And what did I found in there?
A very nice Spearhead for only AU$3.00!
And in a nice colour too! (Just have to hope that the Barramundis will like it too).
So I took it, and it saved me a trip to the tackle shop..

Now my only question is: Should I upgrade the hooks on it for Barra fishing?
To me it seems like it, but has I have never used this lure before, I don't want to ruin his action by over loading it...

Have a good day,
Pecheur

Pech:
Those hooks look like Saltwater VMCs so they should be fine.
They are actually the hooks I prefer on small lures, although they are not super-strong and can bend a little if you are too brutal or try to lift a fish on heavy braid.
I particularly like their thin sharp hook-points: to get a strike is to get a hookup.
Just check that he point-tips are still like needles, as they can curl or break if used carelessly by the previous owner around the rockbars etc.

Billabong fishing is great!
At this time of year, don't forget to check out the sunny shallows in the afternoon where the water will have warmed up a little, often bringing the fish on the chew.
The shallow-running Stalwart is better for that situation, but the Spearhead should work well too.

Hi Marrakai,

Thanks for all this information, this is much appreciated.
As I have never fished the billabongs before, I will try to remember what you said.

For the shallow parts I was thinking of using some Ofmer lures that have been sent to me by one of the Ofmer's agent in Australia, as some kind of unofficial sponsorship. Hopefully the smaller ones should do good over there, as they are very nice.

Have a good day,
